CHAPTER TWELVE
August
"I have a guestroom made up," Toby told us, leading us down a side hallway of his absurdly commodious cottage, "only the one, sorry, hope you won't mind sharing?" He gave me a bland glance over his shoulder. To Lune, he said, "Of course you could both go home, but I'd prefer that August remain under my roof for the moment, until he knows what he's doing with the you-know-what."
"You are kind, thank you," she said, as I was saying, "Well, uh, I really don't know that—" I broke off, prickly with excited confusion. "You don't mind?" I said, tongue clumsy, and Lune sent me a dazzling smile, shook her head.
"Right you are then." My brother ushered us into a snug space with an enormous king-sized bed taking up half the room, untinted engravings on the walls and a hunting scene with hounds and horse over the bed, a window with shuttered Venetian blinds, small mellow lamps casting a golden glow on plump pillows and a colorful bedspread embroidered with heraldic animals. "Bathroom through there, feel free to raid the kitchen if you find yourself getting peckish. I rise at six myself, but I believe wake-up time is the sacred choice of guests, so I won't roust you out for a morning ride at the crack of dawn or anything so cruel. The sound system has quite a fine selection. I recommend Hovhaness's Second Symphony. Good night." He grinned thinly and bowed. "Be excellent to each other."
The door shut behind him. My hands were trembling. In the soft light, Lune was exquisitely lovely and so arousing to behold that I wished I wore a cavalier's broad hat to place discreetly in front of myself. My face still felt itchy with quite literal sunburn from the fleeting splash of radiant energy, and the pit of my stomach was jittering. Lune took two steps and placed her soft, soft lips against my mouth, watching me without blinking. Her cobalt eyes were dilated almost to black, yet shone with gleaming light. I put my arms about her, and closed my own eyes. The nerves of my lips and tongue had somehow become hot-wired to my penis and the base of my spine. Electricity roared in me. I ran my fingers lightly up her side nearly to her bare armpit, and brought my hand between us to stroke her beautiful breast. Through the soft fabric, her nipple pressed my palm. I tugged her top free, caressed her bare skin. The air was drenched with our odors. Her breast was round and full and perky firm, a little heavy in my palm. Instantly, my wet mouth went dry. I snatched my right hand away from her and held it out rigidly, palm toward the wall.
"Ugh—"
"What is—?" Lune drew her head back, concerned. She saw my outstretched, averted arm. "Oh. Darling boy, don't worry about that."
But I had pulled away from her, still powerfully erect but not for long. A burst of real fear coursed in me.
